Women’s World Boxing Championships: Sonia, Pinki and Simranajit enter quarterfinals

India’s fifth day at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi on Monday started on a winning note.

Sonia Chahal, Pinki Rani Jangra and Simranajit Kaur punched their way into the quarterfinals.

Seema Punia made it to the quarters after getting a bye in the 81-kilogram category. Chahal beat former world champion Stanimira Petrova of Bulgaria in the 57 kg category in a split 2-3 verdict. Pinki Rani Jangra beat England’s Ebony Eliss Lily in a 5-0 judgement. Simranjit Kaur too won by 5-0 judgement in the 64-kilogram category, defeating Scotland’s Megan Reed. Mary Kom and Manisha Maun had entered the quarters in their respective categories yesterday.

Meanwhile, Bulgaria’s Olympic champion boxing coach Petar Lesov was today barred from ringside for the remainder of the tournament, which concludes on November 24. The action was taken after his ward Stanimira Petrova accused judges of corruption following a hard-fought pre-quarterfinal loss to India’s Sonia Chahal.
