Prez, VP, PM pay tributes to Nehru on birth anniversary

New Delhi, Nov 14 (PTI) President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the country in paying rich tributes to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 128th birth anniversary today.

President Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan remembered Pandit Nehru and paid homage to him.

“On his 128th birth anniversary, my homage to Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, our first Prime Minister,” Kovind said on Twitter.

“Wish the nation on the occasion of birth anniversary of first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, today,” Naidu tweeted.

Modi, who is in Manila to attend the India-ASEAN summit, also paid tributes to Nehru.

“Tributes to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary,” he wrote on Twitter.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, who is campaigning in Gujarat, tweeted, “Today we remember a brilliant compassionate man. He reminds us: ‘there is nothing more horrifying than stupidity in action’ – Jawaharlal Nehru.”

Former president Pranab Mukherjee and former prime minister Manmohan Singh paid floral tributes at Nehru’s memorial at Shanti Van early in the morning.

A host of other Congress leaders, including former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and the state Congress chief Ajay Maken, were also present at the memorial.

At another function in the central hall of Parliament, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan led Parliamentarians in paying floral tributes at the portrait of Pandit Nehru.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar, Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Statistics and Programme Implementation Vijay Goel, former deputy Prime Minister and Chairperson, Ethics Committee LK Advani, Sitting and former MPs and dignitaries paid tributes to Nehru.

Secretaries-General of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Anoop Mishra and Desh Deepak Verma respectively, and senior officers of Lok Sabha Secretariat also paid floral tributes to India’s first prime minister.

A booklet containing the profile of Pandit Nehru, brought out in Hindi and English by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, was presented to the dignitaries.

Nehru was born on this day in 1889 in Allahabad.
