SC/ST Amendment Bill, 2018 scheduled for consideration and passing in RS today

The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Bill, 2018 is scheduled for consideration and passing in the Rajya Sabha today. The Bill will further amend the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The Lok Sabha has passed the Bill on Monday.

The Union Cabinet had approved it last week after the Government decided to bring a constitution amendment bill in Parliament to restore the original provisions of the SC and ST Act. The amendment is aimed at nullifying the Supreme Court judgment pronounced in March this year. The judgment had diluted the SC/ST Act as the immediate arrest of an accused under this law will no longer be mandatory.

The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Second Amendment) Bill 2018, Homoeopathy Central Council (Amendment) Bill 2018 and The Commercial Courts, Commercial Division and Commercial Appellate Division of High Courts (Amendment) Bill, 2018 are also scheduled to become up for consideration and passing in the House.

In the Lok Sabha, The Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Bill 2018, The Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill 2017 and The Arbitration and Conciliation (Amendment) Bill  2018 are listed for consideration and passing.

The Central Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill 2018, The Integrated Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill 2018, The Union Territory Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill 2018 and The Goods and Services Tax (Compensation to States) Amendment Bill 2018 are also scheduled to become up for consideration and passing in the House.
