President gives assent to 123rd Constitution amendment bill granting constitutional status to OBC Commission

President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday gave his assent to the Constitution (One Hundred Twenty-third Amendment) Bill, 2018 giving constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes.

The Bill was passed by the Parliament in this monsoon session which concluded on Friday.

The act will give the commission full powers to safeguard the rights and interests of the Other Backward Classes(OBCs).

Now the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) will have power on par with the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes.

The NCBC, a statutory body created in 1993, was given limited powers – only to recommend to the government inclusion or exclusion of a community in the central list of OBCs.
