International Youth Day: UN chief says hopes of the world rest on young people

Today is International Youth Day. The day is observed every year to raise awareness about the challenges and problems facing the youth of the world. The theme this year is ‘Safe Spaces for Youth’.

In his message on the occasion, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, the hopes of the world rest on young people. He said Peace, social justice and tolerance, today and tomorrow, depend on tapping into the power of youth.

According to the UN, there are currently around 2 billion young people between 10 and 24 years of age in the world. But one in 10 of the world’s children live in conflict zones and 24 million of them are out of school. Political instability, labour market challenges and limited space for political and civic participation have led to increasing isolation of youth in societies.
