The Supreme Court today directed IGP Meerut to investigate the alleged Hapur lynching case, in which one person was killed and another brutally assaulted by a mob on the pretext they were involved in cow-slaughter.
A bench, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, asked the IGP to file a report within two weeks. The bench also issued the notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on the plea filed by Samiuddin, the survivor of the incident.
The plea sought an independent SIT probe into the case and transfer of investigation and the subsequent trial outside the state. The plea has also sought cancellation of bail granted to the accused. The apex court also directed the SP of Hapur district to consider granting security to Samiuddin. The court posted the matter for further hearing on the 28th of this month.
