India bagged 5 more medals at the Asian Games today, three of them in shooting. Debutant teenager Saurabh Chaudhary clinched India’s first shooting gold of the 18th Asian Games in men’s 10m air pistol , collecting a Games record score of 240.7. Another shooter Abhishek Verma settled for a bronze in the same event.
In the Men’s 50-metres Rifle 3 Positions event, Sanjeev Rajput won a Silver. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated all of them for their feat.
Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore also congratulated Saurabh Chaudhary and Abhishek Verma. Indian wrestler Divya Kakran claimed bronze in women’s 68 kg freestyle event.
India also clinched a maiden Asian Games bronze medal in Sepaktakraw today despite a loss. Though Indian men’s regu team lost to Thailand, yet it picked up a bronze as both the losing semifinalists are also awarded a medal. Sepak means to smash or kick in the Malay language, while “Takraw” originates from the Thai language, meaning woven ball. A game of Sepak Takraw is played between two teams ,known as Regu. Each Regu has three players on court and two substitutes.
The Indian men’s and women’s Kabaddi teams entered semi-finals today after securing emphatic wins against their respective opponents at the Asian Games.The men’s team beat Thailand 49-30 in its fourth and final Group A match. In the women’s competition, India played two matches today, one against Sri Lanka and the other against Indonesia.l It emerged victorious in both to top Group A with an all-win record.
Star gymnast Dipa Karmakar failed to qualify for the vault final but made the cut in the balance beam as India also booked a berth in the title round of the team competition in the Asian Games today.
The Indian Women’s Archery Team qualified seventh at the Asian Games in Jakarta today with an aggregate total of 1908 points of best three individual archers. Ace Indian archer Deepika Kumari was pushed to the 17th position among 66 archers, who qualified in the individual recurve ranking.
In Badminton, India had a good day in the men’s doubles as both its pairings reached the quarterfinals. Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan sailed past Thailand’s Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul and Nuttanon Kadchapanan in round of 16 match. Ramakumar Ramanathan and Sumit Nagal defeated Taipei’s Chen Ti and Peng Hsienyin. Ankita Raina entered the last eight of the women’s singles, defeating Eri Hozumi.
In rowing, Dattu Baban Bhokanal qualified for the men’s single sculls final round while the men’s lightweight four team also made it to the title race in the rowing competition.
However, the Indian women’s Volleyball team slumped to its second consecutive defeat at the Asian Games, today losing 0-3 to Vietnam in a Pool B preliminary match.The Indians are lying at the bottom of six-team Pool B and will next play Kazakhstan on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Asian Games campaign of the Indian women’s Handball team ended today after they suffered their fourth successive defeat to North Korea in their final Group A match.
India is currently placed seventh in the tally with 10 medals, comprising 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 4 Bronze. China with 57 medals, including 29 Gold, continues to top the table. Japan is second in the tally with 46 medals, including 11 Gold. South Korea with 31 medals, including 6 Gold, is placed third.
