15-year old Indian shooter Shardul Vihan today bagged a Silver medal in the Men’s Double Trap event at the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia.
In the Finals, Shardul came close to winning the Gold and finished second with a score of 73 points to give India its 8th medal in Shooting. South Korea took home the Gold, while the Bronze was won by Qatar.
Another Indian in the eventAnkur Mittal had failed to make the Finals. In Women’s Double Trap Finals, Varsha Varman and Shreyasi Singh finished outside the top three ending India’s hopes of a medal in the Women’s section.
Earlier in the day, the pair of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan stormed into the Men’s Doubles Final assuring India of a Silver medal in Tennis. In the semi-finals, the duo came back from a set behind to beat the Japanese team of Sho Shimabukuro and Kaito Uesugi.
In Women’s Singles, Ankita Raina had to settle for a Bronze after she lost to China’s Zhang Shuai, 4-6, 6-7. India now has 17 medals in its kitty – 4 Gold, 4 Silver and 9 Bronze.
Meanwhile, in Badminton, third seed PV Sindhu averted a major scare in the Singles opening round today as she just edged past world number 52 Vu Thi Trang of Vietnam, 21-10, 12-21, 23-21 to enter the Round-of-16. Saina Nehwal and the Indian pairs in Men’s and Women’s Doubles also progressed.
In Archery, India’s campaign ended in Individual Recurve events. Atanu Das bowed out in the quarterfinals, after former world number one Deepika Kumari made a shock exit in the pre-quarterfinals.
In Weightlifting, Sathish Sivalingam and Ajay Singh in Men’s 77 kg category failed to win a medal as they finished outside the podium.
Indian swimmers Srihari Nataraj in Men’s 200 metres Backstroke and Virdhawal Khade in Men’s 50 metres Butterfly made the country proud as they stormed into the Finals. They will swim for the Gold medal in the evening.
In Kabaddi, the Women team sealed a place in the Final after beating Chinese Taipei, 27-14. The Men’s team will face Iran in the semi-finals later today.
In Squash, Saurav Ghoshal and Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu entered the Singles pre-quarterfinals. They as well as Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa will play for a last-8 berth later today.
In Rowing, there has been disappointment for India, so far, as many have lost in the Finals of various categories. Prominent among them was medal hope Dattu Bhokanal who finished last in Men’s Single Sculls Final.
The Indian Women’s Volleyball has lost to Kazakhstan 0-3, in a group match. It was their third defeat in as many games. The Indian eves are now rock bottom in Pool-B.
In Canoe, Champa Mourya failed to win a medal in Single Women event as she finished seventh in the Final.
Bowling, Basketball and Artistic Gymnastics Women’s Vault final will also see the Indian participation.
India is currently ninth in the medals tally. China continues to be at the top, with Japan second and South Korea third.
