Maldives opposition has alleged that country’s Elections Commission (EC) has been directly involved in voter fraud for the upcoming Presidential elections.
A statement by Joint opposition today said new audio recordings strongly suggest that the supposedly independent electoral body is colluding with President Abdullah Yameen to steal the elections.
It said the audio recordings suggest that the EC handed over opposition voter re-registration forms to President The statement added that Elections Commissioner Ahmed Shareef is a former senior official of President’s political party, and EC is stacked full of other government-appointed cronies. A government spokesman did not react to any of the allegations.
President Abdullah Yameen is seeking re-election while the opposition parties have put up Ibrahim Mohammed Solih as the joint candidate for polls scheduled to be held on 23rd September.
The European Union has warned that it will consider imposing targeted sanctions on individuals involved in undermining the fairness of the elections.
