US senator John McCain, a celebrated Vietnam war hero, died last night after losing a battle to brain cancer. He was 81. The six-term senator, McCain was also a Republican presidential nominee in 2008. McCain had been battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer discovered in July 2017.
A fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, he spent more than five years as a prisoner of war after his plane was shot down. While in the custody he suffered torture that left him with lasting disabilities.
In his tribute, President Donald Trump, tweeted his deepest sympathies and respect to the family of the late Senator.
