Olympic Silver Medalist PV Sindhu has assured at least a Silver medal in women’s singles Badminton at the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia. World No. 3 Sindhu stormed into the women’s singles final defeating Akane Yamaguchi of Japan 21-17, 15-21, 21-10 today. Sindhu ed history as she became the first Indian to cement her spot in the final of the Women’s Singles Event at the Asian Games. She will now face World No 1 Chines Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying in a Gold rush tomorrow.
Top shuttler Saina Nehwal settled for a Bronze in the same event today. The World Number 10 Saina took home the bronze after losing her women’s singles semifinal in straight sets 17-21, 14-21 to Tai Tzu Ying.
In athletics, Javelin Thrower Neeraj Chopra is among the number of Indian athletes who will aim to win Gold today. Neeraj will be in action in the Men’s Javelin Throw Final along with Shivpal Singh. Neena Varakil and James Nayana in Women’s Long Jump, and Chethan Balasubramanya in Men’s High Jump will also vie for the coveted yellow metal. Anu Raghavan and Jauna Murmu will figure in the Women’s 400 metres Hurdles Final, with Dharun Ayyasamy, Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan featuring in the Men’s section. Sudha Singh, Chinta and Shankar Lal Swami will aim to make the country proud in 3,000 metres Steeplechase Finals.
In Men’s Boxing, India’s Vikas Krishan today reached the quarterfinals beating Pakistan’s Tanveer Ahmed 5-0 in Middle Weight Event (75kg). Vikas is now just a win away from a medal.
In Women’s Hockey, India defeated Thailand 5-0 in their fourth and final group match. The Indian eves as well as the Men’s team are already through to the semi-finals.
In Sepak Takraw, India beat Nepal 21-5, 21-15 in Men’s Regu Preliminary Group B match.
In Table Tennis, India defeated Macau 3-0 in Men’s group D match.
In Canoe, India men’s team failed to qualify for medal round as they finished fifth in 1,000 meter semifinal 1. They will now take part in Final B.
In Karate, India’s Vishal losT to Uzbekistan’s Shakhboz Akhatov 8-0 in men’s -84kg quarterfinal.
India is currently 9th in the medals tally with 7 Gold, 10 Silver and 20 Bronze. China continues to maintain a substantial lead at the top, with Japan second and South Korea third.
