Srinagar, Sep 3: Krishana Janamashtami was on Monday celebrated with religious fervor and gaiety in the Kashmir valley.
Jammu and Kashmi Governor Satya Pal Malik, three former chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti greeted people on the occasion.
People in colourful dresses visited Krishna temples since early morning in the valley, including Srinagar, the summer capital of Srinagar.
A shoba yatra was taken out from the Habba Kadal area of the old city and marched through different streets, including historic Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the summer capital, where devotees danced. Large number of muslims were seen greeting their Kashmiri pandit brethren during the yatra.
Governor Malik greeted the people and expressed hope that this auspicious occasion would be a harbinger of peace, harmony, progress and prosperity in the State.
He observed that the divine message of Krishna, enshrined in the Shrimad Bhagvad Gita, exhorts mankind to strive for the ultimate truth and to do one’s duty to the best of one’s ability without being concerned about the benefits to be gained.
He observed that adherence to such values provides firm foundation for the functioning of a harmonious society.
On this auspicious occasion, the Governor prayed for the well-being of the people of the State.
The NC President Dr Abdullah and Vice President Omar Abdullah have extended greetings to the people on Janamashtami wishing them well being and prosperity.
In his message, Dr Farooq Abdullah has emphasized the crucial need of further strengthening the bonds of love and harmony between various segments of the society. He prayed for peace and prosperity in the State and hoped that this festival will be celebrated in true spirit of Jammu and Kashmir’s composite culture.
Omar Abdullah, in his felicitation message, said that tradition of celebrating festivals in an atmosphere of amity and brotherhood adds colour to the joyful occasions. He hoped that this festival will be a harbinger of peace and prosperity in the state.
Provincial President National Conference Devender Singh Rana also greeted the people on the auspicious occasion of Janamashtami and prayed for peace and tranquility in the State.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti also congratulated the people of the state on the occasion.
She said that this sacred festival gives people an opportunity to strengthen the spirit of universal brotherhood and peace. She further expressed confidence that celebration of the festival would strengthen social harmony and peace in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. “I am hopeful that the festival will usher in an era of peace, harmony and prosperity in the State as it has been the rich and valuable tradition of the state to celebrate such festivals in an atmosphere of amity and brotherhood,” Mehbooba said.
She added that she is hopeful that the harmony and tolerance, the state of Jammu and Kashmir is known for, will only get strengthened by virtue of such festivals and that she prays for the wellbeing of the people of the state.
