US Open Tennis: Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Dominic Thiem and John Isner advance into quarter-finals

Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, John Isner and J. Del Potro have advanced into the quarterfinals of Men’s US Open Tennis Championship. Serena Williams, Sloane Stephens, and A. Sevastova have advanced to the quarterfinals of Women’s singles event. Serena Williams survived a scare from giant-killer Kaia Kanepi to claim a roller-coaster 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 win in New York and moved a step closer to a record-equalling 24th career Grand Slam title.

Meanwhile, top seed Rafael Nadal entered quarter-final defeating Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3 6-3 6-7 6-4 win.  Ninth seed Dominic Thiem beat Kevin Anderson 7-5 6-2 7-6 to reach the quarter-finals.

John Isner ground out yet another five-set win at the U.S. Open beating Milos Raonic 3-6 6-3 6-4 3-6 6-2 to advance to the quarter-finals of his home Grand Slam for the second time. J. Del Potro of Argentina also qualified for the quarter-finals after beating his opponent in straight games.

Sixth seed Djokovic faces Portuguese Joao Sousa in the fourth round, while Federer plays Australian John Millman today. In Women’s singles today, American M. Keys will meet Slovak D. Cibulkova and A. Sabalenka of Belarus will face  N. Osaka of Japan for a place in the quarter-finals.
