India calls for expediting finalisation of draft CCIT to fight terrorism

India has called for expediting the finalisation of the draft Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) to fight the scourge of terrorism.

Addressing the National Assembly of Serbia in Belgrade last night, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu said, artificial distinction created between good and bad terrorism is the most serious threat in today’s world which can be defeated by organised international action.

Terming terrorism as one of the foremost threats to international peace and security, Mr Naidu said, there is an urgent need to strengthen the global counter terrorism framework to combat the menace.

The Vice President also said, Serbia shares India’s views on United Nations Security Council reforms. He also expressed happiness for Serbia’s support to India’s membership to the Nuclear Suppliers Group.

During the visit, vice president met top leaders of Serbia, including President Aleksander Vucic. He also met members of the business community and addressed the National Assembly.

According to reports, the welcome vice president received here from political leadership and the people shows their high interest and affection for India.

Vice President’s meeting with top leadership here clearly shows the great rapport that exists between the two countries.

The Vice President ‘s Address at the National Assembly of Serbia was received with great enthusiasm and he was given a standing ovation.

Though, trade and people to people engagement between the two countries is relatively small, but both leadership have shown strong desire to strengthen the economic, cultural and political relations.

With Vice president’s visit, ties between the two countries will get a new high in coming days.

After concluding his three day visit to Serbia, the Vice President will leave for Malta Sunday evening.

He will meet the country’s leadership and discuss issues of mutual interest.

Mr Naidu embarked on three-nation tour to Serbia, Malta and Romania on Friday.
