India offers USD 20 mn development grant to Tajikistan

President Ramnath Kovind has said that India and Tajikistan have agreed to further strengthen their Strategic Partnership. India will also offer a grant of 20 million US Dollar to Tajikistan for development projects. On second day of his visit to the Central Asian Country, Mr Kovind today had a meeting with his Tajikistan counterpart Mr. Emomali Rahmon [इमोम-अलीरहमोन] in Dushanbe.

On this occasion both countries signed MoUs in fields of political relations, strategic research, agriculture, renewable energy, traditional medicine, space technology, youth affairs, Culture and Disaster Management. In a statement, Mr. Kovind said that there is enormous potential for bilateral cooperation and collaboration in the fields of defence, trade and investment, tourism, health and development partnership.

He said that India and Tajikistan remain determined to counter all forms of terrorism and violent extremism which are a grave threat to international peace and stability. The President also thanked Tajikistan for their support to India’s membership to the Shanghai cooperation organization.

Later addressing the students at the Tajik National University in Dushanbe, President Kovind said that the war on terror and radicalization is not against any religion, and should never be. Quite on the contrary, it is against those who believe in destroying the creation of the Almighty. Speaking on the topic of ‘Countering Radicalization: Challenges in Modern Societies’, Mr Kovind said that India is a land of equal opportunity and equal respect for all.

According to reports that it was an eventful day of the President’s first trip to the Central Asian Country. Mr. Kovind today met the President of Tajikistan Mr. Emomali Rahmon and both countries signed MoUs in various fields.

India also offerred a grant of 20 million US Dollar to Tajikistan for development projects. President Ramnath Kovind along with President Rahmon visited the Dosti Square for wreath laying ceremony and later paid floral tributes at the bust of  Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore.
