Srinagar : Authorities disallowed congregational weekly prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid in downtown Srinagar by imposing restrictions in the area.
An official said the restrictions were imposed in parts of Srinagar as a “precautionary measure” to prevent any protest against the killing of scholar rebel Mannan Wani and his associate in an encounter in Shatgund village of north Kashmir’s Handwara town.
Early Hurriyat (M) chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq taking to social networking site Twitter wrote: “Even as Kashmir shuts to mourn scholar shaheed Manan Wani , downtown under strict curfew prayers at Jamia Masjid again barred for the 15 th Friday this year while arbitrary arrests PSAs on activists , suspension of Kashmiri students from universities, repeated closure of colleges and universities to disallow dissent continues unabated. This repression coupled with intransigence of Govt of India pushes young boys to armed resistance and a cycle of death and loss.”
Meanwhile, a complete shutdown is being observed in the district to pay homage to Wani.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and Yasin Malik has called for a shutdown today across Kashmir.
