Ace Indian pugilist MC Mary Kom and rookie Sonia Chahal will fight for Gold medals at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi this evening.
In the 48 kilogram category, Mary Kom, aiming to clinch her historic sixth World title, will face Hanna Okhota of Ukraine. It will be Mary’s second meeting with the Ukrainian in three months. The 35-year veteran from Manipur had defeated Hanna in the semi-final of Silesian Boxing Championships in Poland in September.
On the other hand, Sonia Chahal will be up against Ornella Wahner of Germany in the 57 kg division. The 21-year Haryana pugilist is competing in her maiden World Championships and is also one shot away from creating history.
India has, so far, bagged two Bronze medals at the ongoing Championships through Simranjit Kaur in the 64 kg category and Lovlina Borgohain in the 69 kg division.
