Men’s Hockey World Cup: India start campaign against South Africa

India will begin their campaign in the 14th edition of Men’s Hockey World Cup against South Africa in Pool C in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, November 28.

The match will begin at 7 p.m.

Another Pool C encounter will precede India’s opener, which will be between Belgium and Canada at 5 p.m.

Under Manpreet Singh’s charge, India will look forward to winning their second World title, the first having been won in 1975 under the captaincy of Ajit Pal Singh.

The tournament will be played among 16 countries till 16th of next month. India are currently ranked fifth in the world. The pool stage matches will take place till 11th of next month.

Ahead of the start of the tournament, a colourful opening ceremony is slated to begin at 6.30 p.m. today at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will inaugurate it. The state government declared a holiday today for educational institutions in Bhubaneswar.

Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit are all set to dazzle the stage at the opening ceremony. Salman Khan will also perform in another inaugural ceremony in Cuttack tomorrow.

AR Rahman, who has composed the theme song of the World Cup, will perform both in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
