NITI Aayog is organizing a day-long national-level workshop on bamboo development in New Delhi. Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Dr. Rajiv Kumar, NITI Aayog Member Dr. VK Saraswat, and CEO Amitabh Kant inaugurated the workshop today.
On this occasion, Dr. Singh highlighted the role of bamboo sector saying that it is going to be a key driver of economic growth in the post-Covid times. He said, the country has a huge resource of bamboo and it will become an important source of livelihood in the coming years. He said, bamboo can be utilized in every aspect of life and it is environment friendly.
NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Dr Rajiv Kumar said, ranging from conventional use to radical innovation like bio-energy, the bamboo industry contributes to 35 billion dollars in the GDP. He said, growing at a steady rate of five percent compound annual growth rate, the global bamboo market has immense potential, and leveraging India’s strengths can prove to be a great catalyst of growth.
Several stakeholders from India and abroad are attending the workshop to understand the opportunities and challenges in the bamboo sector. NITI Aayog is in the process of formulating pragmatic policies and technologies for the holistic development of the Indian bamboo industry.
