Jonaraja Institute of Genocide Studies announces establishment of MM Abhinavagupta Chair

The Jonaraja Institute of Genocide and Atrocities Studies (JIGAS) is pleased to announce the establishment of the MM Abhinavagupta Chair in Cultural Genocide Studies at our esteemed institution. This significant initiative aims to deepen the academic study, research, and understanding of cultural genocide and its profound impact on societies worldwide.

The MM Abhinavagupta Chair in Cultural Genocide Studies is named in honor of MM Abhinavagupta, a renowned philosopher and scholar whose contributions have greatly enriched our understanding of culture, philosophy, and human existence. By focusing on cultural genocide, this interdisciplinary chair will delve into historical and contemporary instances of cultural destruction, exploring various dimensions, causes, consequences, and potential avenues for prevention and redress.
The chair derives its inspiration from the profound words of Mahamaheshwracharya Abhinavgupta, a renowned philosopher and scholar, as documented in chapter 15 of his Śrītantrāloka. These verses highlight the significance of knowledge centers in resisting the discourses of otherness that underlie the heinous crime of cultural genocide.

Under the leadership of Mr. Moti lal Pandit as the Head and Mr. Sunil R Rajanka as the Co-Head, the Abhinavagupta Chair in Cultural Genocide Studies will pursue the following objectives to advance the field of cultural genocide studies:
Research: The chair will undertake comprehensive research, investigating the underlying mechanisms of cultural genocide, as well as its social, political, and cultural implications. This research will also explore potential methods for prevention and mitigation.
Documentation: Recognizing the importance of preserving cultural heritage, the chair will facilitate the documentation of case studies, testimonies, and narratives related to cultural genocide. This vital work will foster awareness among scholars, policymakers, and the wider public.
Education: The chair will offer educational programs, seminars, and workshops, aiming to disseminate knowledge on cultural genocide, promote interdisciplinary dialogue, and encourage critical thinking among students, scholars, and practitioners.
Collaboration: To foster a global approach, the chair will actively seek collaborations with national and international institutions, organizations, and scholars engaged in related research and advocacy. This collaborative effort will facilitate knowledge exchange, joint projects, and initiatives aimed at addressing cultural genocide.
Policy Recommendations: The chair will provide evidence-based insights and recommendations to policymakers, human rights organizations, and governmental bodies. These recommendations will guide the development of policies and strategies aimed at preventing and addressing cultural genocide effectively.
