The Union government has launched the Critical Minerals Innovation Hackathon 2026 to encourage students, researchers, startups and research institutions to develop technology for mineral exploration and intelligence, supporting the objectives of the National Critical Mineral Mission.

Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy launched the programme on August 25. The initiative is intended to connect technical talent with clearly defined challenges in a sector that is important for advanced manufacturing, clean-energy systems, electronics and strategic industries.

The hackathon has two problem statements. The first seeks a mineral-prospectivity mapping solution using open data. Participants are expected to develop a heatmap identifying areas with potential for lithium or rare-earth-element pegmatites and validate their results against known mineral occurrences.

Prospectivity mapping brings together geological information and analytical methods to prioritise areas for further investigation. A well-designed open-data approach could help researchers examine large datasets more systematically, although any digital model would still need field investigation and technical validation before supporting exploration decisions.

The second problem statement calls for a smart technology and patent tracker for critical minerals. The proposed web-based system would monitor research, development and intellectual-property information, helping users identify technological trends, emerging areas of work and gaps that may require further domestic research.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Aluminium Research Development and Design Centre in Nagpur, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Mines, will organise and host the hackathon. Participants will be offered a platform to present ideas and receive expert mentorship while developing their proposed solutions.

Ideas must be submitted by September 20. Winners are scheduled to be announced during India Mining Week 2026, which will be held from November 15 to 17. Two teams will be selected under each problem statement, with first prizes of ₹1.50 lakh and second prizes of ₹1 lakh.

Critical minerals are economically and strategically important because many modern technologies depend on materials with concentrated supply chains or limited substitutes. Improving knowledge of domestic resources and tracking technological progress can help India plan exploration, research, processing and industrial development more effectively.

The hackathon also reflects an effort to bring universities and startups into national mineral-security work. Students and researchers can contribute new analytical methods, while startups may be able to convert successful concepts into tools that support government agencies, laboratories and industry.

The two challenges also address different parts of the same policy problem. Prospectivity mapping looks at where resources may be found, while the patent tracker examines the technologies being developed to explore, process and use them. Together, they can improve both geological and technological intelligence.

The programme’s value will ultimately depend on whether promising entries progress beyond the competition stage. Technical evaluation, access to reliable datasets, expert review and opportunities for further development will be important if the selected ideas are to become useful systems for exploration and research planning.
