New Delhi, June 2: Five newly appointed judges of the Supreme Court of India were sworn in today, raising the court’s strength to 37 out of the sanctioned 38 judges. Chief Justice Surya Kant administered the oath at a ceremony held in the Supreme Court premises.
The judges sworn in are Justice Sheel Nagu, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Justice Arun Palli, and Senior Advocate Venkita Subramani Mohana. Justice Mohana’s elevation marks a historic milestone as she becomes only the second woman in India’s history to be directly appointed to the Supreme Court from the Bar.
The appointments are expected to ease the mounting backlog of cases and strengthen the functioning of Constitution Benches. With diverse judicial experience from multiple High Courts, the new judges bring fresh perspectives to the apex court’s deliberations.
The Union Law Ministry issued the appointment notification on June 1, following collegium recommendations made in late May. The ceremony was seen as a significant step in reinforcing representation and efficiency within the judiciary.
