India’s energy demand is likely to rise 2.5 times by 2047 as the country continues to grow and develop, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said.
Puri said the increase will be driven by faster economic growth, expanding industries, rising incomes and greater access to energy. India is already one of the world’s biggest energy consumers, and its demand is expected to play a major role in shaping global energy markets in the years ahead.
He stressed that meeting this growing demand will require a steady supply of energy as well as greater focus on energy security and affordability. The government is working to diversify supplies and reduce dependence on any single source of energy.
Puri also highlighted India’s efforts to expand renewable energy and promote cleaner fuels. Green hydrogen, biofuels, electric mobility and other new technologies are expected to become increasingly important as the country works towards a cleaner energy system.
He said India’s energy transition must move alongside its development needs, ensuring that clean and affordable energy remains available to households, businesses and industries.
As India works towards its goal of becoming a developed country by 2047, Puri said continued investment, new technology and cooperation across the energy sector will be crucial to meeting the country’s future energy requirements.
