Veteran filmmaker Kuku Kohli, husband of actress Aruna Irani, passed away in Mumbai at the age of 77 after suffering a cardiac arrest. He had been receiving treatment at a hospital after falling ill and undergoing a medical procedure.
Kohli was one of the familiar names in Hindi commercial cinema, particularly during the 1990s. He made his directorial debut with Phool Aur Kaante in 1991, the film that introduced Ajay Devgn as a leading actor. The movie became a major success and helped establish Devgn in Bollywood.
He went on to direct several popular films, including Suhaag, Haqeeqat, Zulmi, Anari No. 1 and Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa. His last directorial venture was Woh Tera Naam Tha, released in 2004.
Kuku Kohli married veteran actress Aruna Irani in 1990. The couple did not have children together. Kohli had two daughters from his earlier marriage.
His death has left the Hindi film industry mourning the loss of a filmmaker whose work was closely associated with mainstream Bollywood cinema of the 1990s and early 2000s.
