Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on India’s private space companies to build an innovation ecosystem capable of attracting global talent, investment and customers, placing policy consistency and entrepreneurial confidence at the centre of the sector’s next phase of growth.
In an interaction with chief executives and founders from 20 space startups, whose transcript was released on National Space Day on August 23, the Prime Minister said innovators entering a new field needed confidence that the policy environment would remain stable. He linked consistency in government decisions with the willingness of entrepreneurs and investors to take technological and commercial risks.
The discussion reflected the expanding range of work being undertaken by Indian space startups. Participants described projects involving launch vehicles, satellite propulsion, ground-station networks, robotic spacecraft, docking and refuelling technologies, orbital-debris removal and space-based pharmaceutical manufacturing. The breadth of proposals showed how private activity is moving beyond launch services into specialised technologies across the space economy.
Modi said India’s advantages included competitive costs, a strong talent base and an appetite for risk. He urged companies to create an international reputation strong enough to draw professionals from abroad to Indian startups and space institutions. Startup representatives said the opening of the sector had also encouraged Indian professionals working in the United States and Europe to consider returning.
Skyroot Aerospace chief executive Pawan Kumar Chandana described the company’s launch progress and plans to increase launch frequency. He said manufacturing facilities had already been built to support a higher operational tempo. Other entrepreneurs outlined ambitions to establish an international network of ground stations and develop engines used by satellites for manoeuvring during their operating lives.
The interaction also highlighted emerging commercial areas that will require sophisticated engineering and careful testing. One company described a robotic spacecraft intended to capture and remove defunct satellites from orbit. Another said it was working on docking and refuelling capabilities, while a space-pharma startup outlined plans to manufacture pharmaceutical products in orbit and return them to Earth.
These projects illustrate the shift from a space programme led almost entirely by public institutions towards a broader ecosystem involving startups, manufacturers, investors and research organisations. The government’s role includes maintaining a predictable framework, enabling access to infrastructure and supporting Indian companies seeking international business.
National Space Day is observed annually on August 23 to mark Chandrayaan-3’s successful soft landing near the Moon’s south polar region. This year’s discussions placed private enterprise alongside national scientific achievements, with the emphasis on converting technical capability into scalable products, services and high-value employment.
The immediate challenge for the companies will be to translate ambitious development plans into reliable systems, regular missions and sustained contracts. The Prime Minister’s message was that India should use its combination of skills, cost competitiveness and policy support to secure a larger position in the global space economy.
