Jammu and Kashmir Warned of Heavy Rain and Flash-Flood Risk

Jammu and Kashmir has been placed on heightened weather watch as the Meteorological Department forecast a spell of rain and thunderstorms across the Union Territory, with isolated heavy showers expected in parts of the Jammu division before wider and more intense activity develops over the following days.

The latest forecast indicates generally hot and humid conditions with brief rain or thundershowers at a few places through August 22. Weather activity is expected to increase during the night, when isolated heavy showers may affect Jammu, Reasi, Udhampur, Rajouri, Kathua and Samba districts.

A more active phase is forecast from August 23 to 26. During this period, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected at many places across both the Jammu and Kashmir divisions, while some locations may receive heavy rainfall. Jammu, Reasi, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, Anantnag and Kulgam are among the districts identified as potentially affected. Moderate to intense showers have also been forecast for Poonch, Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar.

The advisory is significant because short spells of intense rain in the Union Territory’s mountainous terrain can rapidly raise water levels in streams and local drains. The department has cautioned that the expected conditions may create a risk of cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides, mudslides and shooting stones at vulnerable locations between August 23 and 26.

Residents have been asked to remain away from rivers, streams, nallahs, loose structures and places known to be vulnerable during heavy rainfall. Travellers, tourists and transport operators have also been advised to plan journeys carefully and avoid hilly roads while intense showers are under way. Conditions on mountain highways can change quickly because of falling stones, slips and reduced visibility.

The warning is particularly relevant for districts with steep slopes, narrow valleys and road stretches exposed to landslides. People living in low-lying or flood-prone areas should monitor local advisories and avoid crossing fast-flowing water. Departments responsible for disaster response, roads, power, health and district administration have been advised to maintain precautionary readiness.

The broader national forecast issued on August 21 also indicates widespread rainfall over the Jammu and Kashmir region through August 23, with isolated heavy rainfall likely on August 22. The regional forecast provides more detailed district-level guidance for the subsequent active spell.

Forecasts may be refined as the weather system develops. Residents and visitors should therefore rely on the latest official alerts, traffic updates and district instructions before undertaking travel, particularly in the Chenab Valley, Pir Panjal region and other landslide-prone areas.

Weather conditions are expected to become hot and humid again from August 27 to 30, with brief rain or thunder possible at some places. Until then, the principal concern remains the possibility that concentrated rainfall may trigger localised hazards even where rainfall is not continuous across an entire district.
