Indian Railways has approved a third Vande Bharat Express service between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, with a scheduled stop at Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan railway station in Udhampur, adding another premium train option on the strategically important Jammu-Kashmir rail corridor.

The approval was conveyed by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a letter shared publicly by Union Minister Jitendra Singh. The proposed service is intended to increase passenger capacity between Jammu and Srinagar while giving travellers from Udhampur direct access to another Vande Bharat connection.

The inclusion of Udhampur is an important part of the announcement. The district is a major administrative, military and transport centre in the Jammu region, and its railway station serves passengers travelling from Udhampur town as well as surrounding areas. A stop on the new service is expected to make journeys towards both Jammu and the Kashmir Valley more convenient for local residents.

The additional train will operate on the rail link connecting the Jammu region with the Kashmir Valley. The route has emerged as a major infrastructure achievement because it provides an all-weather railway connection through difficult Himalayan terrain. It also offers an alternative to road travel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which can face disruptions during severe weather, landslides and maintenance work.

The new Vande Bharat service is expected to supplement the existing passenger capacity rather than replace any announced train. However, the precise timetable, date of commencement, fare structure and operational days have not yet been detailed. These matters are normally notified closer to the start of a new railway service.

Residents in Udhampur have welcomed the decision, viewing the stop as recognition of a long-standing local demand. Better rail access can support students, employees, business travellers, patients and tourists who regularly move between the Jammu region and the Kashmir Valley.

The service may also strengthen tourism and economic activity by improving movement between major urban centres and intermediate districts. Faster and more dependable transport can make short-duration travel easier, while increased capacity can help during periods of high passenger demand.

Rail connectivity across Jammu and Kashmir carries wider significance because the region’s geography makes surface travel challenging. The expansion of passenger services can reduce pressure on the highway and provide travellers with greater choice, although road and rail systems will continue to complement each other.

The Vande Bharat platform is designed for inter-city travel and is associated with faster acceleration, modern passenger facilities and improved onboard comfort. Trains deployed on the Jammu-Srinagar sector must also meet operational requirements linked to the mountainous route and prevailing weather conditions.

The next formal step will be the publication of operational details by the railway authorities. Until the timetable and launch date are issued, passengers should treat the approval as confirmation of the new service while waiting for booking and schedule information through official railway channels.
