Srinagar, July 20: Heavy rainfall lashed Srinagar on Monday, inundating several low-lying areas and exposing persistent shortcomings in the city’s urban drainage infrastructure. Waterlogging was reported from a number of localities, disrupting normal life and causing inconvenience to commuters and residents.
Several roads, residential colonies, and commercial areas remained submerged after continuous rain overwhelmed the drainage network. Traffic movement was affected on key roads as vehicles moved slowly through waterlogged stretches, while pedestrians struggled to navigate flooded streets.
Residents expressed concern over the recurring problem of urban flooding, stating that even a few hours of intense rainfall result in water accumulation in many parts of the city. They urged the authorities to improve the drainage system and ensure regular desilting of drains to prevent such situations in the future.
Officials from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation and other departments monitored the situation and deployed teams to clear blocked drains and facilitate the drainage of accumulated rainwater. Pumping stations were also kept operational to minimize waterlogging in vulnerable areas.
The Meteorological Department has forecast intermittent rain and thunderstorms across Jammu and Kashmir over the next few days and has advised people to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall and to follow official advisories.
