Srinagar, July 20: Director of the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, popularly known as Sonam Lotus, has warned of an unstable weather spell across Jammu and Kashmir, urging people to remain cautious as intermittent rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to continue over the next few days.
According to the Meteorological Department, several parts of the Union Territory are likely to experience light to moderate rain accompanied by intense showers at isolated places. The department has also warned of the possibility of flash floods, landslides, mudslides, shooting stones, and a rise in water levels in rivers and streams, particularly in the hilly districts of Jammu and the higher reaches of Kashmir.
Sonam Lotus advised residents, tourists, and pilgrims to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall and to strictly follow weather advisories issued by the administration. He said vulnerable areas, especially along national highways and mountain roads, remain prone to landslides and shooting stones due to the saturated soil conditions.
The warning comes after widespread rainfall triggered flash floods and landslides in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir, disrupting road connectivity and causing damage to infrastructure. Authorities have intensified monitoring of vulnerable locations and have deployed emergency response teams to deal with any weather-related incidents.
The Meteorological Department has urged district administrations to remain on alert and advised the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins. People living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas have been asked to exercise caution until the weather conditions improve.
