The Territorial Army has launched Terrier Cyber Quest 2026, a national-level hackathon designed to identify and develop indigenous responses to emerging challenges in defence, cybersecurity and the information domain.

The programme is being organised in collaboration with CyberPeace and is intended to bring together participants from academia, industry, research institutions, government organisations and the armed forces. Registration is open until August 31, giving technical teams and individuals a limited window to enter the competition.

The initiative will focus on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, threat mitigation and digital awareness. It seeks practical ideas that may be relevant to national security while also encouraging a broader pool of technical talent to engage with contemporary defence problems.

The competition has been divided into three tracks: Bug Hunting, AI Kavach and the Creators Challenge. The Bug Hunting track is centred on identifying security weaknesses, while AI Kavach focuses on the use of artificial intelligence in protective and security-related applications. The Creators Challenge addresses communication and digital-awareness requirements in the information domain.

After registration closes, an online shortlisting phase will be conducted from September 1 to 10. Selected participants will then advance to the grand finale in New Delhi from October 6 to 8. This staged structure allows entries to be assessed remotely before finalists assemble for the concluding round.

The hackathon comes at a time when cyber threats, hostile information activity and the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence are creating new demands for military and national-security institutions. Conventional defence preparedness increasingly depends on the security of networks, data and digital communications, as well as the ability to identify vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.

By opening the challenge to participants beyond the armed forces, the Territorial Army is seeking to connect defence requirements with expertise available in universities, technology companies, research bodies and public institutions. Such collaboration can widen the search for useful solutions and expose young developers and security researchers to real-world problem areas.

The emphasis on indigenous solutions is also aligned with India’s broader effort to build domestic capability in strategically important technologies. Cyber tools and artificial-intelligence systems can involve sensitive data, specialised operational requirements and rapidly changing threat patterns, making local research and development particularly relevant. This approach also gives organisers a structured way to compare technical merit, usability and relevance across very different kinds of submissions.

The programme does not itself amount to the adoption of any submitted product for military use. Entries will first pass through the competition and evaluation process, and any further application would remain subject to the required technical, security and institutional assessment.

For prospective participants, the immediate milestones are the August 31 registration deadline, online evaluation in early September and the October finale in New Delhi. The results will indicate which concepts the organisers consider most promising across the three competition tracks.
