Jammu, August 20: Security forces launched a search operation in the Billawar forest belt of Kathua district on Thursday after residents reported suspicious movement near the Udhampur-Kathua boundary, according to Akashvani News.
The operation was concentrated in forested areas adjoining the district boundary. The immediate trigger was information from a family in a village in the Billawar belt, which reported unusual activity outside its home late on Wednesday night.
Local report prompts security response
According to the account reported by Akashvani Jammu, unidentified persons allegedly knocked on the door of the house during the night. The family did not open the door. The following day, they found that food kept inside the house was missing, raising suspicion that someone may have entered the premises.
The report was passed to the authorities, following which security personnel began searches in the surrounding forest area. No identity or affiliation of the people allegedly seen in the area had been officially established at the time of reporting. There was also no official confirmation of an encounter, arrest, recovery or exchange of fire.
Superintendent of Police, Kathua (Operations), Pritpal Singh described such searches as part of routine measures undertaken to maintain vigilance in border areas. His statement indicated that the operation was precautionary and that the available information had not yet produced a confirmed security incident.
Vigilance in forested border terrain
Kathua district contains an extensive mix of villages, forest tracks and difficult terrain. The Billawar side also lies close to the boundary with Udhampur district. Reports from isolated settlements in such areas are examined by security agencies because movement through wooded stretches can be difficult to verify immediately.
Search operations in response to local inputs typically involve checking likely routes and nearby forest patches while maintaining contact with residents. In this case, the authorities have not disclosed the number of personnel deployed, the exact villages covered or the duration of the search.
The distinction between a precautionary search and a confirmed counter-terror operation remains important. The official information available so far supports only that forces acted after a report of suspicious movement. Claims extending beyond that have not been confirmed.
Residents asked to remain alert
The response also underlines the role of timely information from people living near forest and border belts. Local observations can help authorities assess unusual movement, particularly at night or in areas where visibility is limited.
Security forces were continuing the search and vigilance measures in the area when the report was issued. Further details are expected only if the operation leads to a verified finding or the authorities release an additional statement.
