Vadodara: India’s Dedicated Freight Corridor network has become fully operational after Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the final three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor to the nation in Gujarat on Tuesday.

The newly commissioned stretches cover 326 route kilometres and were developed at a cost of more than ₹20,700 crore. They comprise the New Sanand North–New Makarpura, New Umbergaon–New Saphale and New Saphale–New JNPT sections.

The opening provides direct freight-corridor connectivity to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, one of the country’s principal gateways for containerised trade. It is expected to support faster movement of export-import cargo between industrial centres and the port while reducing pressure on the conventional railway network around Mumbai.

The Prime Minister also flagged off freight services from New Sanand North, New Makarpura, New Umbergaon and New JNPT. Their commencement marks the transition of the completed infrastructure into regular logistics operations.

The dedicated corridor system was designed to separate a substantial share of freight traffic from passenger lines. By placing heavy and long-distance cargo trains on purpose-built routes, the network is intended to increase carrying capacity, improve reliability and create additional space for passenger services on existing tracks.

The completed network extends for about 2,800 kilometres through the Eastern and Western corridors. The Western corridor links major production and consumption centres with ports on the west coast, while the Eastern corridor serves industrial and energy-intensive regions across northern and eastern India.

At the Vadodara programme, the Prime Minister also dedicated the Jobat–Tanda Road rail line, part of the Chhota Udepur–Dhar project. The link connects remote and tribal areas of Alirajpur with the national rail network and is intended to improve access for passengers and local economic activity.

Foundation stones were laid for three additional railway projects spanning 329 kilometres and costing more than ₹9,700 crore. Together with the freight corridor, these projects formed a substantial part of a wider package of development works valued at more than ₹35,000 crore.

For businesses, the principal benefit of a dedicated freight route is greater predictability. Shorter and more reliable transit can reduce inventory and logistics costs, particularly for manufacturers and exporters moving goods over long distances or working to fixed shipping schedules.

Direct access to JNPA is especially significant because the final approach to a port can become a bottleneck even when the main rail route has spare capacity. A continuous dedicated connection allows cargo trains to reach the port without depending on heavily used suburban and passenger corridors.

The project also supports the wider policy of integrating railways, highways, ports and logistics parks. The gains will depend on efficient terminal operations, last-mile links and coordination between the railway system, port authorities and freight customers.

Completion of the final Western corridor sections closes a long construction phase for one of India’s largest rail infrastructure programmes. Attention will now shift to traffic growth, service reliability and the extent to which the corridors deliver lower logistics costs and free capacity on the conventional rail network.
