Jaisalmer, Nov 3 — Defence Minister Rajnath Singh set out the government’s plans to expand domestic defence manufacturing as a consultative committee met on Tuesday to review the modernisation of India’s armed forces. The government is targeting ₹3 lakh crore in annual defence production and ₹50,000 crore in exports by 2029.
The export goal is about 30 per cent above the ₹38,424 crore India recorded in 2025–26. Domestic production would need to rise by nearly 70 per cent from that year’s ₹1.78 lakh crore to reach the 2029 target. Public-sector defence undertakings supplied just over half of India’s defence exports in 2025–26, with private companies accounting for about 45 per cent.
At the meeting, the committee reviewed the impact of new technologies on warfare and discussed ways to equip the services more quickly. Singh said the government was committed to giving the armed forces the technology they need to deal with current and emerging security challenges.
