India’s real gross domestic product grew 7.8 per cent in the April-June quarter of 2026-27, accelerating from 6.9 per cent in the corresponding quarter a year earlier and signalling continued strength in domestic economic activity.

Real GDP at constant prices was estimated at Rs 81.36 lakh crore, compared with Rs 75.46 lakh crore in the first quarter of 2025-26. Nominal GDP at current prices rose 10.3 per cent to Rs 88.27 lakh crore from Rs 80 lakh crore a year earlier.

Gross value added, which measures the value generated by producers after accounting for input costs, expanded 8.2 per cent in real terms. Real GVA was estimated at Rs 73.82 lakh crore, against Rs 68.21 lakh crore in the same period last year.

Nominal GVA increased 11.5 per cent to Rs 80.53 lakh crore. The difference between the real and nominal measures reflects price changes alongside the increase in the volume of economic activity.

The services sector provided substantial support to the quarterly performance. The broad tertiary sector grew 10 per cent at constant prices, with financial, real-estate and professional services among the stronger components.

Manufacturing also recorded firm expansion, while private consumption continued to contribute to demand. Private Final Consumption Expenditure increased 7.1 per cent at constant prices during the quarter, indicating that household spending remained an important growth driver.

The first-quarter result came despite global uncertainty, elevated energy risks and disruptions affecting international supply chains. India’s exposure to imported crude oil means that prolonged price increases can raise production and transport costs, affect inflation and place pressure on the external account.

The 7.8 per cent growth rate is higher than the 6.9 per cent recorded in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. Quarter-to-quarter comparisons, however, need caution because seasonal patterns differ and national accounts are primarily assessed against the same period a year earlier.

The figures are estimates and may be revised as more complete information becomes available. National-account statistics draw on data from multiple sectors and administrative systems, with successive releases incorporating updated evidence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the performance reflected the strength and resilience of the Indian economy despite oil-price shocks, supply-chain issues and global uncertainty. The Government views the result as evidence that consumption, investment and services have continued to support growth.

The composition of expansion will remain important in the coming quarters. Sustained manufacturing growth, productive investment, job creation and manageable inflation will determine how widely the benefits of a strong headline number are transmitted across households and businesses.

Risks include volatile energy costs, uneven global demand and weather-related pressures on agriculture and food prices. At the same time, public capital expenditure, credit availability and domestic consumption may continue to support activity.

The April-June estimate gives the financial year a strong opening, but the full-year outcome will depend on performance across the remaining three quarters. Future releases will show whether the momentum is maintained as businesses and consumers respond to changing global and domestic conditions.
