Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has become the first non-medical woman officer in the Indian defence services to attain a two-star rank, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of women’s leadership roles in the armed forces.
She assumed charge as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters on September 1. The appointment places her in a senior role connected with the Indian Air Force’s education and institutional-development responsibilities.
Sharma was commissioned into the Education Branch of the Indian Air Force on June 18, 1994. Her career of more than three decades has included assignments at training establishments, field stations, command headquarters and Air Headquarters, giving her experience across operational-support and policy environments.
Her promotion is significant because women officers have historically reached senior ranks in the Military Nursing Service and medical branches earlier than in other streams. Sharma is the first woman outside the medical services to reach Air Vice Marshal or an equivalent two-star rank across the Army, Navy and Air Force.
During her service, she has worked on initiatives linking military education with academic and strategic institutions. Among them was the establishment of Indian Air Force Chairs of Excellence at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and Savitribai Phule Pune University. Such arrangements are intended to deepen academic engagement on technology, aerospace and strategic studies.
She had previously become the first woman officer from the three services to command a Sainik School when she served as Principal of Sainik School Kapurthala. Sainik Schools prepare students for academic progression and encourage entry into the National Defence Academy and other officer-training institutions.
The latest appointment comes as the armed forces continue to widen the professional avenues available to women. Women officers now serve in a growing range of branches, command appointments and specialist roles, while policy changes in recent years have expanded permanent commissions and opened additional training and career pathways.
Two-star appointments carry responsibilities beyond the management of a single unit or establishment. At Air Headquarters, the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff functions within the service’s senior staff system, contributing to policy, planning and implementation in the assigned domain.
The Education Branch supports professional military education, training standards, academic development and instructional systems required by a technologically intensive air force. The branch’s work also intersects with partnerships involving universities, research bodies and other institutions.
Sharma’s elevation reflects both individual service experience and the gradual broadening of the senior leadership pool within the defence forces. It also provides a visible career benchmark for women officers commissioned in non-medical branches.
Her tenure begins at a time when the Air Force is placing increased emphasis on advanced technology, joint operations and continuous professional learning. The appointment gives her responsibility for helping align education policy and institutional capability with those evolving requirements.
