India has dispatched its first tranche of emergency assistance to Nepal after devastating flash floods struck areas near the country’s border with Tibet, causing heavy loss of life and leaving hundreds of people missing. A C-130J transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force carried 10 tonnes of humanitarian assistance and essential medicines from Hindon airbase to Kathmandu on Wednesday night.

The consignment included temporary shelters, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps, medicines and other essential relief material required during the immediate phase of disaster response. The deployment was made after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed India’s readiness to provide all possible humanitarian support.

The Indian Air Force said further air effort involving C-17 and C-130 aircraft was being prepared to transport additional supplies. Helicopters were also earmarked for rescue and evacuation tasks if required by Nepalese authorities. The response is being coordinated with Nepal as search teams work across severely affected areas.

Reports available on Wednesday night placed the death toll at least 95, while several hundred people were reported missing. More than 100 Indian nationals were among those whose whereabouts were not immediately known. Many foreign travellers in the affected region were associated with routes leading towards the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu began coordinating with the Nepalese government and issued emergency contact arrangements for Indian nationals and their families. The priority remained tracing missing persons, supporting rescue work and ensuring that verified information reached families as field conditions continued to change.

The flash floods affected the Bhote Koshi river system and caused extensive damage in and around Rasuwa district, including Timure and nearby areas. Roads, bridges, vehicles and local infrastructure were reported damaged or washed away, complicating access for rescue teams. Nepal’s security forces and disaster-response agencies deployed personnel and helicopters as the search expanded.

Indian authorities also began monitoring possible downstream effects. States bordering river systems connected with Nepal were advised to remain alert to sudden changes in water levels, while central agencies maintained contact with state governments. The approach reflects the need to manage both the humanitarian emergency in Nepal and any related risk to communities on the Indian side.

India has frequently deployed military transport aircraft, rescue teams and essential supplies during natural disasters in neighbouring countries. The present operation combines immediate material support with contingency planning for additional airlift and evacuation assistance. The scale and timing of further deployments will depend on Nepal’s requirements and the accessibility of affected locations.

The situation remained fluid early Thursday, with casualty and missing-person figures subject to revision as communications were restored and rescue teams reached isolated pockets. Indian agencies said they would continue coordinating closely with Nepalese authorities. The first airlift provides urgent shelter and medical material, while additional assistance is expected to follow as a clearer assessment of needs emerges.
