Leh, August 20: United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived in Leh on Thursday after completing a visit to Kashmir, extending his first official tour of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh since assuming charge in New Delhi in January.
The ambassador, who also serves as the US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, travelled from Srinagar to Leh after morning flight operations were delayed by adverse weather. Officials cited by DD News said the delay had initially created uncertainty over whether the Ladakh leg would proceed.
Visit follows meetings in Srinagar
Before travelling to Leh, Gor met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar. Akashvani News reported that their discussion covered India-US relations and areas in which the United States could engage with Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah said the emphasis was on positive engagement and future collaboration.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India and an exceptionally beautiful place. He also acknowledged steps taken by the Union Government and the administration in Jammu and Kashmir to improve security.
The ambassador indicated that the United States would review its travel advisories for the region. The statement was an indication of review, not a formal change in the advisory. Any revision would require a separate decision and publication by the US authorities.
Strategic context of Ladakh leg
Gor’s arrival in Leh gives the visit a wider regional dimension. Ladakh shares sensitive frontiers with China and Pakistan and has remained strategically significant following the military tensions along the Line of Actual Control that intensified in 2020.
DD News noted that the visit is among the significant trips by a senior US diplomat to the frontier Union Territory since the Galwan Valley clashes and the subsequent India-China military stand-off. The report did not announce a detailed public programme for the ambassador in Leh.
The Dalai Lama was also in Leh for his customary summer stay and religious engagements, but there was no confirmation at the time of reporting that he would meet Gor. It would therefore be premature to describe such a meeting as scheduled.
Focus on engagement and travel perception
The Kashmir portion of the tour drew attention because of the ambassador’s comments on improved security and the possibility of reviewing the US travel advisory. Travel advisories influence how government employees, tourists, institutions and insurers assess destinations, though the practical effect depends on the precise language of any eventual revision.
For Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector, a formal easing by a major foreign government could carry symbolic and commercial importance. At present, however, the verified development is that the ambassador said the issue would be reviewed.
Gor’s visit continued in Leh after the weather-related delay. Further details were awaited regarding his official engagements in Ladakh and whether the visit would produce any additional statement on regional cooperation.
