Japan Credit Rating Agency has raised India’s long-term foreign-currency and local-currency issuer ratings by one notch from BBB-plus to A-minus, while retaining a stable outlook.

The agency has also lifted India’s country ceiling by one notch to A. The upgrade recognises the economy’s growth performance, improvement in the quality of public expenditure, stronger financial-sector conditions and resilience in the external account.

India’s real gross domestic product expanded by 7.8 per cent in 2025–26 and maintained the same growth rate in the first quarter of 2026–27. The assessment highlighted private consumption and public investment as important supports for growth despite an uncertain international environment.

Economic policies that strengthen productivity and the foundations for expansion also influenced the decision. Digital public infrastructure and the Goods and Services Tax were cited among reforms that have helped formalisation, efficiency and broader economic activity.

The rating assessment noted a shift in the quality of government spending towards capital expenditure, particularly infrastructure investment. This matters because productive assets can support future growth even as the government works to reduce the fiscal deficit.

The Centre’s fiscal deficit narrowed from 4.7 per cent of GDP in 2024–25 to 4.4 per cent in 2025–26. The stable outlook indicates that the agency presently sees the balance of risks around the revised rating as broadly manageable.

India’s banking system was another factor in the upgrade. Asset quality has improved following regulatory supervision, government capital support and the use of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. Bank profitability and capital adequacy were assessed as sound, while non-banking financial companies have also recorded improvement in asset quality and capital buffers.

The external position remains an important protection against global shocks. India’s current-account deficit is contained, helped by a surplus in services trade, while foreign-exchange reserves remain substantially higher than short-term external debt.

A sovereign credit rating reflects an agency’s view of a government’s capacity and willingness to meet financial obligations. It can influence how international investors assess country risk, although borrowing costs also depend on global interest rates, inflation, liquidity and domestic market conditions.

The upgrade follows positive rating actions by other international agencies over the past year. Morningstar DBRS upgraded India in May 2025, S&P Global Ratings followed in August 2025, and Japan’s Rating and Investment Information acted in September 2025.

The government has welcomed the latest decision as recognition of stronger economic fundamentals. Sustaining the rating trajectory will require continued growth, fiscal consolidation, financial stability and protection against external vulnerabilities.

The A-minus assessment provides a favourable signal at a time of global economic and geopolitical uncertainty. Its longer-term significance will depend on whether investment-led growth, job creation and public finances continue to improve without weakening macroeconomic stability.
