Srinagar, October 10: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday criticised the Centre’s handling of protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi, saying it reminded him of the treatment Kashmiris had experienced over the years.
In a statement, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said preventing opposition voices from being heard and denying citizens the opportunity to raise legitimate concerns weakened democracy.
Abdullah said an active and empowered opposition was essential for effective administration. Its responsibility, he added, was to bring public grievances to the government’s attention and hold those in power accountable.
He stressed that the opposition’s role extended beyond criticising the government. It also involved representing people’s aspirations, examining policies and defending constitutional principles.
Abdullah argued that claims of good governance lost credibility when dissent was not tolerated. He said democratic institutions depended on free expression, respect for different opinions, public involvement and accountability, warning that moving away from these principles would damage democracy.
