New Delhi, October 1: President Droupadi Murmu has said that Mahatma Gandhi’s message of peace and non-violence holds even greater significance today as conflicts continue in different parts of the world.
In a message issued ahead of Gandhi Jayanti, President Murmu said Gandhi’s life and principles continue to inspire people in India and across the world. She noted that at a time when wars and violence are causing suffering in many regions, Gandhi’s belief in peaceful dialogue and non-violent action remains particularly important.
The President recalled Gandhi’s commitment to truth, peace and the welfare of society, saying his ideals continue to offer guidance in dealing with challenges facing humanity.
She also referred to Gandhi’s philosophy of Sarvodaya, which places the welfare of all people at its centre. According to the President, this principle has relevance to India’s development journey as the country works towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.
President Murmu said the benefits of development should reach every section of society and called for an approach based on empathy, inclusion and social responsibility.
She urged citizens to draw inspiration from Gandhi’s values and make them part of their everyday lives. She also called for collective efforts towards building an empowered, developed and self-reliant India.
Gandhi Jayanti will be observed on October 2, marking the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The day is also observed by the United Nations as the International Day of Non-Violence.
Gandhi’s ideas of non-violence and peaceful engagement have continued to influence movements and discussions on peace, justice and conflict resolution around the world.
