Captain Smit Machchhar Praised After Flydubai Flight Emergency
New Delhi: Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar has been praised by President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar following the dramatic incident aboard a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
Machchhar was the captain of Flight FZ1073 when an altercation reportedly broke out in the cockpit during the flight. According to reports, the captain was attacked and seriously injured, while the aircraft experienced a rapid drop in altitude.
Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to help open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to intervene. The situation was brought under control and the aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. All 174 people on board were reported safe.
The incident drew attention in India after senior leaders publicly acknowledged the pilot’s actions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Machchhar’s courage and dedication in helping prevent a much more serious outcome. President Droupadi Murmu also commended his courage and presence of mind, while External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed his appreciation and wished him a speedy recovery.
Machchhar, an Indian national and experienced Boeing 737 pilot, is currently receiving treatment in Saudi Arabia. Reports said his condition was stable following the incident. Indian authorities have also remained in contact with his family and the Saudi authorities regarding his treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the cockpit confrontation are still being investigated. Authorities have not yet established a confirmed motive, and Flydubai has urged people to avoid speculation while the investigation continues.
The incident has drawn international attention to the captain’s response during a highly unusual in-flight emergency, as well as the actions of passengers and crew who helped bring the situation under control.
