Kathmandu: At least six people were killed and several others injured after a passenger bus overturned in Nepal’s Nawalparasi district on Saturday morning, police said.
The bus was travelling from Nepalgunj to Kathmandu when it met with an accident in the Daunne area of Binayi Tribeni Rural Municipality along the East-West Highway.
According to police, the vehicle lost control and plunged into a roadside drain after its brakes reportedly failed. The accident happened at around 4 am.
Initial reports said the bus was carrying around 17 to 18 people, including the driver. Six passengers were killed in the crash, while others suffered injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Four people died at the scene, while the death toll later increased to six. Several of the victims have been identified by the authorities, while the identity of one deceased person was yet to be confirmed.
The injured were initially taken to Madhyabindu Provincial Hospital in Danda. Some were later shifted to hospitals in Bharatpur for further treatment.
Police and rescue teams reached the site soon after the crash and began clearing the area and helping the injured. Authorities are also looking into the circumstances that led to the accident.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety on Nepal’s highways, particularly in mountainous and winding stretches where vehicle control can become difficult.
Further details about the victims and the condition of those injured are expected as authorities continue their assessment.
