Jammu Smart City Adds 25 Electric Buses Under PM e-Bus Sewa

Jammu Smart City Limited has signed an agreement with PMI Electro Mobility Solutions Private Limited to add 25 electric buses to Jammu’s public transport fleet under the Government of India’s PM e-Bus Sewa scheme. The agreement expands an electric mobility network that already operates 100 buses in the city.

The agreement was signed on Thursday by Jammu Smart City Limited Chief Executive Officer Dr Devansh Yadav, representing the Housing and Urban Development Department of the Jammu and Kashmir Government, and Chandra Kant Goyal, Chief Operating Officer for SPV Operations at PMI Electro Mobility Solutions. Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar was present.

The additional buses are intended to increase access to clean public transport as Jammu’s urban footprint and daily travel requirements continue to grow. Once deployed, they will supplement the existing electric fleet rather than replace the current services, giving the operator additional capacity for route planning and passenger movement.

The new vehicles will operate from the Bhagwati Nagar Depot, which is being developed by Jammu Smart City Limited as a dedicated electric bus and mobility facility. The depot is an important part of the expansion because electric bus operations require charging, parking, maintenance, dispatch and monitoring arrangements that differ from those used by conventional diesel fleets.

During the programme, PMI Electro Mobility presented its electric bus products and passenger-oriented features to the Jammu Smart City leadership. Dr Yadav also briefed the Divisional Commissioner on the fleet augmentation plan and the status of supporting infrastructure at Bhagwati Nagar.

The foundation stone for the Bhagwati Nagar Depot was laid earlier in August. The parallel development of the depot and procurement of the additional buses is intended to ensure that operating infrastructure is available as the fleet expands. The implementation schedule will depend on the progress of the depot, delivery of vehicles and completion of operational preparations.

Jammu’s existing fleet of 100 electric buses has already established a base for zero-tailpipe-emission public transport in the city. Adding 25 buses represents a 25 per cent increase over the current fleet and could provide greater flexibility to strengthen services on busy routes or extend coverage where passenger demand and operating conditions permit.

Electric buses can reduce local exhaust emissions and noise, but their effectiveness also depends on reliable charging, preventive maintenance, route scheduling and dependable power supply. The Bhagwati Nagar facility will therefore be central to sustaining daily availability and ensuring that vehicles spend more time in service.

The PM e-Bus Sewa scheme supports the deployment of electric buses in cities while encouraging the creation of associated infrastructure and professional operating systems. For Jammu, the latest agreement links the national programme with the city’s existing smart mobility work and provides a defined next step for expanding the fleet.

The agreement does not by itself place the buses on the road. Vehicle delivery, testing, registration, staffing, charging arrangements and route integration must follow before passenger operations begin. Jammu Smart City Limited will now have to coordinate these stages with the operator and relevant government agencies.

The expansion is expected to strengthen public transport capacity while advancing Jammu’s transition towards cleaner urban mobility. Its practical impact will be measured by timely deployment, service frequency, passenger coverage and the performance of the new depot once regular operations commence.
