The Indian Navy has received Samarthak, its first indigenous multi-purpose vessel, marking the delivery of a versatile platform designed for trials, evaluation, surveillance, patrol and humanitarian missions. Larsen & Toubro built the ship at its Kattupalli facility and handed it over on Thursday.

Samarthak contains more than 75 per cent indigenous content and has been conceived primarily as a trial and evaluation platform. This role will allow the Navy to support the testing and assessment of equipment and systems while retaining the flexibility to undertake additional operational and support tasks when required.

The vessel is engineered for maritime surveillance and reconnaissance, offshore patrolling and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. Its multi-role design means it is not restricted to a single mission profile and can be assigned according to operational or testing requirements.

The name Samarthak means “The Proponent” and reflects the ship’s intended function as an enabler for a range of naval activities. The platform adds a specialised capability to the fleet at a time when the Navy is expanding indigenous construction across combatants, support vessels and auxiliary ships.

A trial and evaluation vessel can support the introduction of new technologies by providing a dedicated platform for structured testing at sea. Equipment intended for naval service must be assessed under actual operating conditions, including vibration, weather, endurance and interaction with existing ship systems. A purpose-built vessel can make that process more organised and reduce reliance on operational warships for every stage of evaluation.

The surveillance and reconnaissance role gives Samarthak relevance beyond trials. The vessel can contribute to monitoring activity in assigned maritime areas, while its offshore patrol capability provides flexibility for presence missions and support to wider maritime-security tasks.

Its humanitarian assistance and disaster-relief capability is also significant for the Indian Navy’s regional role. Naval ships are frequently used to deliver relief supplies, provide communications, support evacuation and reach coastal or island areas after cyclones, floods and other emergencies. A multi-purpose platform can be configured to assist such missions when needed.

The indigenous-content level reflects participation by Indian shipbuilding and equipment suppliers. Domestic construction supports local design, production, maintenance and lifecycle support, while allowing naval authorities to work more closely with manufacturers during upgrades and repairs.

Larsen & Toubro’s Kattupalli shipyard has become an important private-sector facility within India’s naval industrial base. The delivery demonstrates the role that private shipbuilders can play alongside public-sector yards in meeting naval requirements and expanding the country’s overall shipbuilding capacity.

Delivery is an important milestone, but the vessel must still pass through the Navy’s processes for acceptance, crew preparation and operational integration before it assumes its full range of duties. The pace of deployment will depend on completion of these stages.

Samarthak’s induction will give the Navy a dedicated indigenous platform with broad utility rather than a narrowly defined combat role. Its value will be seen in how effectively it supports technology trials, maritime awareness, patrol duties and emergency response across different operating conditions.
