Amarnath Yatra Concludes After Over 4.8 Lakh Pilgrims Visit Shrine

Srinagar: The annual Shri Amarnathji Yatra concluded in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday with the traditional Chhari Mubarak rituals at the cave shrine, formally bringing the 57-day pilgrimage to a close.

More than 4.8 lakh devotees undertook the pilgrimage this year through the Pahalgam and Baltal routes. The yatra began on July 3 and concluded on August 28, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan, in keeping with the established religious calendar.

Mahant Deependra Giri, the custodian of the Chhari Mubarak, led the holy mace to the shrine. Special prayers were performed at the cave, marking the ceremonial culmination of the pilgrimage. The arrival of the mace is the final major ritual associated with the yatra and carries deep religious significance for devotees.

The pilgrimage to the Himalayan shrine is conducted through two routes. The traditional Pahalgam axis involves a longer approach through Chandanwari and the upper reaches, while the Baltal route provides a shorter but steeper journey. Managing movement on both routes requires extensive coordination because of the high altitude, difficult terrain and rapidly changing weather conditions.

The number of pilgrims recorded during the season placed sustained demands on registration, transport, accommodation, sanitation, medical assistance and route management. Temporary facilities and control arrangements were maintained at base camps and along the tracks to support the flow of devotees during the pilgrimage period.

Security and emergency preparedness remained central to the conduct of the yatra. The movement of pilgrims, service providers and vehicles was regulated through a coordinated system designed to respond to weather interruptions and operational requirements. Health support was also important because the cave shrine is located at high altitude, where low oxygen levels and steep climbs can affect pilgrims with underlying conditions.

The formal conclusion of the yatra also begins the process of winding down seasonal facilities and restoring the pilgrimage corridors. This includes the removal of temporary infrastructure, waste management and assessment of facilities used during the season. Such work has become an important part of managing the environmental impact of large religious gatherings in the fragile Himalayan region.

The 2026 pilgrimage began after months of preparation involving the shrine administration and civil authorities. Arrangements covered access control, camp services, transport links, communications and contingencies for adverse weather. The completion of the yatra without extending beyond the notified calendar allows the administration to shift attention to post-season restoration and review.

For local service providers, transporters and workers, the pilgrimage period also creates a concentrated season of economic activity. At the same time, the scale of movement requires close regulation to protect pilgrims and the mountain environment.

With the Chhari Mubarak prayers completed, the religious observances connected with this year’s pilgrimage have ended. The focus will now move to dismantling temporary facilities, accounting for the season’s operations and incorporating lessons from 2026 into preparations for the next yatra.
