New Delhi, October 14: India and the United States are making progress in their trade negotiations, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Tuesday, as officials from both countries continue working through the remaining issues.
Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, Jaishankar said the discussions were at an advanced stage. He added that India’s Commerce and Industry Minister and the United States Trade Representative were working to finalise the agreement.
Jaishankar described the negotiations as moving towards a “landing point”, expressing confidence in the direction of the talks. An agreement has yet to be concluded, with differences over tariffs and market access still being addressed.
The minister also discussed India’s wider relationship with Washington. He said the two countries have a strong strategic partnership, while explaining that such a relationship does not amount to an alliance.
Jaishankar said changes in the United States’ approach to the world had led countries to rethink how they engage with Washington. His remarks came as India and the US continue efforts to reach a trade agreement amid those changing relationships.
