Chandigarh, October 21: Punjab Police have arrested seven people and seized a hand grenade, two pistols and 3.491 kilograms of heroin during an operation against an alleged network involved in drug trafficking and the smuggling of weapons and explosives.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said Amritsar Rural Police carried out the operation. Sharing the details on social media, he said the arrests were part of an investigation into the network’s activities.
Preliminary findings suggest the accused were in contact with smugglers based abroad, Yadav said. These smugglers allegedly supplied illegal weapons for further distribution among criminal elements. Police are investigating the suspected overseas connections.
Cases have been registered at Chatiwind and Lopoke police stations. Investigators are working to trace the sources of the seized drugs and weapons, establish their intended destinations and identify other people linked to the network.
Yadav said further investigation was underway to uncover the full chain of suppliers and recipients. He reiterated the Punjab Police’s commitment to tackling drug trafficking, illegal arms, explosives smuggling and organised crime.
