The Indian Navy will commission Nipun, the second Diving Support Vessel of the Nistar class, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on August 31, strengthening its capacity for deep-sea diving, underwater intervention and support to submarine-rescue operations.

Nipun was designed and constructed in India by Hindustan Shipyard Limited at Visakhapatnam. The vessel was delivered to the Navy on July 30 after completing an extensive programme of construction, outfitting and trials, and its commissioning will formally bring the specialised platform into naval service.

Diving Support Vessels provide the stable shipboard infrastructure required for sustained work beneath the surface. Their role includes supporting divers, managing underwater equipment and coordinating complex intervention tasks that cannot be conducted effectively from ordinary surface vessels.

Nipun is fitted with modern diving systems and underwater-intervention capabilities intended to support operations in demanding sea conditions. The platform also includes medical facilities associated with diving work, where specialist support and careful monitoring are essential to personnel safety.

The ship incorporates modern navigation and platform-management systems along with precise station-keeping capability. Accurate positioning is particularly important during underwater operations because a vessel must remain within a tightly controlled area while divers or equipment work below the surface.

The platform is also expected to augment the Navy’s ability to support submarine-rescue operations. Such missions require specialised equipment, trained personnel, rapid coordination and a vessel capable of serving as an integrated base for underwater activity and medical response.

Nipun’s construction in an Indian shipyard adds an industrial dimension to its operational value. Specialised support ships involve the integration of marine engineering, sensors, navigation, diving complexes, medical systems and mission equipment. Building this capability domestically helps retain technical knowledge and strengthens the supporting network of Indian manufacturers and service providers.

The vessel is the second ship of the Nistar class, allowing the Navy to expand availability for underwater missions across its maritime areas of interest. Multiple platforms also provide greater flexibility for training, maintenance and deployment, rather than concentrating specialised capability in a single ship.

Commissioning is an important transition, but it is followed by the continuing work of crew preparation, systems familiarisation and operational integration. The ship’s effectiveness will depend on coordinated performance by its sailors, divers, medical teams and technical specialists.

The ship can also support the development of specialist skills by giving diving teams a dedicated platform for training and readiness. Regular exercises will be necessary to maintain coordination among ship handlers, underwater operators, technicians and medical personnel before any emergency deployment.

Once commissioned, Nipun will join the fleet as a purpose-built platform for complex operations below the sea surface. Its induction reflects the Navy’s effort to strengthen underwater support capacity while increasing reliance on Indian design, construction and through-life technical support.
