Kyiv, October 7: At least two people were killed after Russian ballistic missiles struck Ukraine’s capital early Wednesday, Ukrainian officials said.
Explosions were heard across central Kyiv around 3 am. A non-residential building in the Podilskyi district caught fire after being hit, while another strike sparked a blaze at a garage complex in Darnytskyi. Emergency crews extinguished the garage fire.
The attack on Kyiv was part of a wider wave of Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine. In Pryluky, in the northern Chernihiv region, a missile hit an apartment building, leaving rescuers searching through the rubble.
Later reports put the death toll in Pryluky at 19, including five children, with another 55 people injured. Those casualties were separate from the two deaths reported in Kyiv.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned a day earlier that intelligence indicated Russia was preparing a large attack. Ukrainian officials reported damage to residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure during the overnight strikes.
