Six people were killed and three others injured after a vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in the Sheldhar area of Surankote tehsil in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Wednesday evening. The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Poonch towards Sheindhara when the driver lost control, leading to the fatal accident.
Officials said six occupants died on the spot, while three others sustained injuries. The injured were identified as Tahir, 22, Mohammad Amin, 24, and 11-year-old Arsalan Ahmed, all residents of Seri Chohana. Emergency teams, including ambulances from Poonch and Surankote, were immediately rushed to the accident site for rescue and evacuation operations.
Two of the injured, Mohammad Amin and young Arsalan Ahmed, were reportedly in critical condition and were referred to Government Medical College in Jammu for specialised treatment. Authorities said all necessary medical arrangements had been made to provide treatment to the injured.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the district hospital in Poonch for medico-legal formalities. Police have taken cognisance of the incident and initiated an investigation to determine the exact circumstances and cause of the accident.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the loss of lives and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families. He directed the district administration to provide immediate assistance to those affected and ensure proper medical care for the injured. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed deep grief and directed authorities to extend all possible assistance to the affected families.
